In the beginning: |
It
was 1995 and the setting was the UNLV campus. In the hopes to
reunite children separated through foster or other out of home
care Lynn Price held the first Camp To Belong (CTB). Lynn, who
was volunteering as a CASA and Child Haven volunteer, was herself
a former youth in care. She and her sister had been placed in different
foster homes when Lynn was a baby. Lynn didn’t learn she
had a sister until she was eight. |
| A few years after the first Camp
To Belong, Lynn and her family moved to Colorado. Her budding organization
went with her; however CTB has always hosted Nevada’s kids
at camp. Now in its eleventh year, CTB has reunited siblings from
all over the US, Canada and the Virgin Islands. |
| Currently in the U.S., of the 600,000 siblings living in foster care, 75% of
them are separated from at least one sibling when placed in foster care. Camp
To Belong’s primary goal is to provide a sense of belonging to youth as
individuals, and as siblings, giving them opportunities to share childhood memories
together and among other youth in the same situations. |
